Slave Compensation Act 1837 (United Kingdom – aka England)
“An Act to carry into further Execution the Provisions of an Act for completing the full Payment of Compensation to Owners of Slaves upon the Abolition of Slavery.”

The British government paid £20,000,000 for the freeing of slaves to more than 40,000 slave owners. That was 40% of the governments receipts at the time.
The payments lasted until February of 2015 !
